One’s mind may automatically turns to thoughts of global warming during a hot summer day. Many have pointed out that on a day to day basis, it is not reasonable to blame bad weather on global warming. However, this summer, ‘local’ heatwaves have morphed into a Northern Hemisphere one. America, Northern Europe, and Japan are simultaneously suffering from historic temperature rises.

Though the specific weather patterns driving the heatwaves in different parts of the Northern Hemisphere may differ, the overall phenomena is one that this site has anticipated. As the Arctic warms at an accelerated rate, the melting permafrost will result in growing volumes of methane and other carbon gases being released in the atmosphere. This self-reinforcing cycle will cause the Northern Hemisphere to experience an acceleration in the rise of atmospheric temperature as a ‘methane dome’ forms. When the Arctic finally experiences an ice-free summer (as defined by less than 1 million square kilometers of sea ice), then the odds of a catastrophic release of methane goes up as the summer sun causes the water temperature of the Arctic Ocean to spike higher (which would then melt the permafrost found on the ocean floor).
Paleo-climate researchers have argued that the current level of carbon gases in the atmosphere is consistent with a further rise of 5 degrees Centigrade in global average temperatures — the natural self-reinforcing global warming cycles that will get us there will ultimately create that end game.
